Zinc Alloy Die Casting Overview

A custom metal product needs more than an attractive image. Its shape, relief, attachment points and finish all need to work together as a manufacturable design. Zinc alloy die casting is an option for custom challenge coins, medals, keychains, fridge magnets, bottle openers and other metal gifts. Suitability depends on the product structure, size and intended use.

Start with what the finished item must do: a display coin, wearable medal and functional bottle opener have different design priorities. Share the artwork, dimensions, quantity and use requirements so our team can review the material and production route before tooling is approved.

Material Selection: Zinc Alloy, Iron, Brass or Stainless Steel?

Material selection and manufacturing method should be reviewed together. A cast zinc alloy design can incorporate shaped outlines and sculpted relief, but the mold, metal flow and release direction must be considered. A design developed for stamping, cutting or machining may need changes before it can be cast.

Zinc alloy is evaluated as a cast substrate for shaped outlines and modeled relief. Iron is a ferrous alternative; its surface protection and finished appearance should be specified rather than assumed. Brass is a copper-zinc alloy that can be formed or cast, and its natural appearance or a plated finish may be part of the design decision. Stainless steel is a family of grades with different forming and finishing characteristics, so the word stainless alone is not a complete material specification.

When comparing zinc alloy with iron or brass, ask how the proposed route will reproduce the lettering, recessed areas, relief and edges. When considering stainless steel, discuss the intended structure, cutting or forming requirements and the appearance of the finished surface. None of these material names alone guarantees that a particular design or finish will be suitable.

Compare the complete quotation: mold complexity, part geometry, order quantity, surface preparation, coloring and assembly can affect the project cost. The lowest material price is not necessarily the lowest finished-product cost. Our engineering review should establish a suitable material and construction rather than treating different metals as interchangeable.

2D & 3D Relief for Custom Metal Products

We offer both 2D and 3D relief options for custom metal products. The best choice depends on your design and the look you want to achieve.

2D Relief

2D relief uses raised and recessed metal areas to create a clear, layered design.

Best for: Logos, text, simple patterns, and decorative borders.

3D Relief

3D relief creates smooth, sculpted details for a more realistic appearance.

Best for: Portraits, animals, buildings, and detailed designs.

Design Review Before Mold Making

You can send us your logo, drawing, or AI-generated image. Our team will check the size, lettering, and details, and suggest adjustments if needed.

After your order and mold fee are confirmed, we provide production artwork for your approval before making the mold.

Complex professional 3D modeling is quoted separately.

From AI Images to Approved Artwork and Mold Making

Before an order, we can provide free AI concept visualizations and related revisions based on your logo, AI images and reference materials. These visuals help discuss appearance. They are not the final production specification, and AI-generated lettering, dimensions or structural details may need correction.

For challenge coins and other applicable custom metal products, formal pre-production artwork is provided after the order is confirmed and the mold fee is paid. It normally identifies size and thickness, raised and recessed metal areas, plating color, enamel or UV printing, front and back designs, attachments and product structure.

We make the mold after you approve the formal artwork. Standard production artwork is included in the applicable mold fee and is not charged separately. Professional, complex 3D modeling is quoted separately; confirm the scope and price before that work begins.

Review spelling, proportions, finishes, color placement and attachment details carefully at the artwork stage. Changes requested after mold making may affect the tool, cost and schedule and must be reviewed separately. Approval does not include a promise of unlimited free mold changes.

Surface Finishing Options and Design Trade-offs

Polishing changes how the underlying metal surface reflects light and prepares the visible areas for the selected finish. Surface preparation needs to preserve the intended relief and lettering. A bright reflective finish can make scratches or uneven preparation more noticeable than a deliberately textured appearance.

Gold-, silver- and nickel-tone plating provide different visual directions. Antique brass and antique bronze finishes can emphasize the contrast between recessed and raised areas. Black nickel provides a darker metallic appearance. Specify the desired look and a reference where available; screen colors alone do not define the appearance of a real metal finish.

Soft enamel generally keeps color areas below surrounding metal lines, while hard enamel aims for a flatter polished appearance. The design needs appropriate boundaries and areas for the chosen coloring method. UV printing can reproduce printed graphics, but surface shape, access and the relationship between the print and relief need review.

Not every plating, enamel or printing option is suitable for every structure or combination of finishes. Discuss recesses, exposed edges, intended handling and the desired balance of metallic areas and color. The artwork and quotation should identify the approved combination rather than assuming every option can be applied together.

Quality Review for Zinc Alloy Die Cast Parts

For a die cast design, review begins with whether the metal has formed the intended shape completely and whether the relief and lettering are clear. Areas around edges, narrow connections and attachment features need attention alongside the decorative face.

Trimming and edge treatment should address burrs and unwanted material without damaging the design. Polishing quality, visible scratches and the condition of the surface before plating influence the finished appearance. Plating appearance and color consistency should be checked against the approved specification or agreed reference.

Finished-piece screening should also consider assembly and the intended use of attachments. Agree on the important visual and functional checks before production. This is a design-specific quality discussion, not a guarantee of zero defects, an unverified yield claim or a substitute for an agreed inspection standard.

Questions About Custom Zinc Alloy Die Casting

Can you make a zinc alloy product from an AI-generated image?

An AI image can be a visual reference. We review the intended size, lettering, relief, reverse side and attachments, then clarify details that the image does not define. Free pre-order AI concepts are separate from the formal artwork approved before mold making.

Is formal production artwork included in the mold fee?

For challenge coins and other applicable custom metal products, standard formal artwork is included in the corresponding mold fee. It is supplied after order confirmation and payment of that fee, and you approve it before the mold is made.

Is professional 3D modeling a separate charge?

Yes. Professional, complex 3D modeling is quoted separately. A 3D-looking AI concept is not the same deliverable as an engineered or professionally modeled relief. Please confirm the modeling scope and quote before work starts.

Which plating and coloring options can I request?

Options for review include polishing, gold-, silver- and nickel-tone plating, antique brass, antique bronze, black nickel, soft enamel, hard enamel and UV printing. The available combination depends on the structure and surface design; it must be confirmed for your project.

What information should I send for a quotation?

Send your logo or references, product type, approximate size and thickness, quantity, front and back design, desired relief, finish, coloring, attachments, packaging and delivery requirements. Identify functional requirements such as opening a bottle rather than leaving them to inference from a concept image.
